Christmas Gifts

Last year Jeff and I were in the process of moving, and decided that for our Christmas presents I would buy him a new car (green 1998 Honda Accord...a whole decade younger than our faithful white 1988 Toyota Camry) and he would buy me a house. After much searching and waiting we gave up on the house, until today. After taking two months off from searching we put in an offer today and will see how it goes. I could be happy moving, and I am happy here, so either way I see it as a win-win. But, to keep all you in the loop, here is the possible new kitchen/dining room in the possible new condo

Christmas

We are decorating for Christmas and getting ready for Sunday, the first day of advent. It seemed fitting to have rain today, and at 54 degrees it marks one of the coldest days in California in a long time.

It is fun to have the girls involved in the celebration, and to talk to them about the meaning behind the things that we put in our house. Jeff made hot chocolate for the girls and I as I put some lights up in the girl's room. We then had hot chocolate together and put things in out advent calendar. It has been a special morning, and I hope that this is just a small sample of the special times that we will have during this season as we remember Jesus' birthday, and the greatest gift of all times.

Potty Training: Day 2

I know I already posted today, and I posted three times yesterday, which should show you that I have been home way too much lately talking and thinking about potty and poop all day.

Day 2 of potty training is going really well. Kate was completely accident free, including one #2 this morning, until 11:30 when she had a #1 outside, and then shortly thereafter that she had a #2 accident...YUCK! I actually saw it happening in this video below when she looked down at the end of the video I could tell something was happening, and yes, SOMETHING did happen. But, up until 11:30 she did great! We even ventured to the store today which took about 15 minutes to walk there, 20 minutes in the store and then 7 minutes to get back (I ran!) and she had no accidents!! When we got home I set her on the toilet and viola, potty!

I think I have noticed a trend with my sweet Kate. She is really good until she gets tired and then she has accidents. I think it will just take her a little longer to figure things out, but overall I think she is making excellent progress!!

Fresh and Easy

Fresh and Easy is my new favorite grocery (think Market Basket without the crowds or saw dust). The greatest part of F&E is the 50% off part...I mean really, who sells produce and meats for 1/2 the price? Fresh and Easy. Some recent finds in the 50% off were 6 pears for $1.28 and 12 lbs. of chicken breasts for $15. Another great part, they don't take manufacture's coupons so they have their own coupons: $6 off $30 or more and $10 off $50 or more. I think it's better than manufactures coupons because I don't always want the brand or sometimes there are cheaper brands even after they coupon. With F&E coupons I can get what I want and save money. I love, love, love Fresh and Easy. Plus, they have free samples and coffee. It's a win win for the kids and I!

How we Survive

So the only way we made it through day 1 of potty training is by being able to play outside. We had a box left from our washer and dryer and we made an awesome house. If Kate did have an accident I simply moved the house and hosed down the patio. It was perfect! We'll see how engaging the house is tomorrow. We may have to find some other toys that are interesting and play outside.

Watch out for puddles!!

More Potty Training

I kept with it, thinking that after being refreshed she may do better. Kate went potty and after watching Hannah poop she also pooped in the toilet! No poopie diapers for me today!!!! :)

Go KATE!!

Potty Training: Attempt 1

Kate is interested in the toilet. She loves watching people using the toilet (TMI?) and will say "pot-tee" or "poo" followed by her wrinkling her nose and making and sniffy sounds, which is what I do when changing her diaper because let me tell you, this little girl can do some big stinks! (TMI, again?)

Given her interest and her ability to communicate when she poops topped with the fact that we are sick so we can't go anywhere I decided to start potty training. We actually started last night, and had two successes, no failures. I was very optimistic when I woke up that today Kate would catch right on and be completely potty trained by the time Jeff got home tonight. (Polk, are you laughing?)
Kate went potty this morning first thing, was rewarded with an M&M and then put on some undies. She had an accident in her chair during breakfast, but I think it occurred when she said "pot-tee" and pointed towards the toilet. Being strapped in she could no go to the potty, and half awake I didn't realize that she could communicate before she needed to go that she needed to go.
Cleaned up accident #1, had two successes, both with her initiating! Seriously?!? Was is going to be that easy?

No.

After that she seemed to hit a wall, which is typical of Kate. Most mornings Kate still wants a morning nap, and most mornings I distract and stretch her so she only takes one nap. So, right around 11:00 she hit a wall: three accidents in a row, followed by her telling me "poo" and when I sat her on the toilet she tooted and then threw a massive tantrum because I did not give her an M&M. Looking back I would have given her a reward to keep the successes coming, but hind sight is 20/20.

She finally calmed down, had two more accidents and began screaming, "No, no, no" waving her hands when I got a new pair of undies out after the second accident. I forced them on thinking, "Wow, I have strong willed children" which is a little like the pot calling the kettle black, as I was determined to have her trained by the evening...really? She threw her self down and rolled and kicked her way out of the undies. At this point I realized she was a. tired b. frustrated and c. done with potty training for the day.
I put a diaper on her, she chuckled an exhausted kind of chuckle, went to her room, crawled in bed and cried herself to sleep. The girl was clearly tired and relieved to be back in her diaper.

Jeff asked last night what my plan was and I said, "To see how it goes." Now I know: she may have the ability, she may have the interest but she does not have the patience it takes to potty train right now. Anyway you look at it, I think the verdict is she needs more time. I know I rushed through some stages of her infancy, mostly because I was tired, but I don't want to rush her through toddlerhood. Time is precious and I want to enjoy these moments with her rather than racing through life and forcing her to grow up. She is my baby, and I like it that way!

The Cabin

Growing up my family and I would take vacations at my parent's cabin in Big Bear. This last weekend we took Hannah and Kate there for the first time, and it was like giving them a small piece of my childhood. So, what do you do at the cabin with no TV, phone, computer, or anything technical?

1. Play pots
The cabinets at the cabin are more like shelves: no doors. It is great for taking pots and pans out and banging then together. This was a favorite thing my sisters and I did, and the girls seemed to love it too!!

2. Hike
One of our favorite family hikes is the Dam Hike. We have a whole slew of dam jokes that we tell on the dam hike, and it never seems to get old.
Jeff is leaning against a redwood for those who have never seen a redwood.
Looking at the water in the Dam

3. Sit around Dudley and play games.
Dudley is the wood burning stove that heats the entire 5 bed, 2 story cabin, and Dudley is awesome!! It dropped down to the teens at night, and Dudley was blazing so hot we had to open windows just to cool down!! At little Cabinlore for those interested: The cabin was built by a group of Firefighters in 1936. The Firefighters aquired Dudley after putting out a cabin fire. Dudley was the only thing that remained, so they took Dudley, cleaned it up and now have it buring in the cabin. My dad taught Hannah war...she beat him almost every time!

4. Throwing rocks and collecting sticks
This is a major no-no in the Murry family (and I have even been yelled at by Roger for throwing rocks) but on Nichols vacations throwing rocks is a highlight. We pick a landmark (tree, water, rock...) and then throw rocks to try to hit it.

5. Push over dead trees
Now, this doesn't sound very environmentally friendly, but the trees are dead, and dead trees fall over in the winter anyway, and if there is any life in the tree is doesn't fall over even when you push it, so I'm justifying it as a fun cabin activity. On hikes if we see a dead tree we try to push it over.
Jeff and my dad knocking over a dead tree: Hannah enjoyed watching it happen.
TIM-BER!! Kate didn't like the noise the tree made when it feel, and she began to cry :(

My ambitious husband and my overconfident dad...
...this tree was clearly dead but oo big for them to push over, despite how hard they tried!

6. Roast marshmellows
No explanation needed, just a warning: Don't let your mellow stay too long in Dudley...
...or you'll get burned!

7. Swinging on a tree swing

I loved taking the girls to the cabin. I hope that we can go again sometime soon!!

Toddler Tatters

Tatter has her own toddler bed, no more crib! Yesterday I put her down for nap in it and I heard Hannah say, "Swipper, get back in bed!!" (Side note: for those who don't know, Swipper is a fox from Dora that tries to swipe things from Dora, hence the name Swipper. Kate is called Swipper because she takes things or knocks things over, and it helps curtail Hannah's frustration by saying, "Ah Swipper!"). I went into the room and there was Kate, sitting on the floor with toys out. She looked up at me, smiled and said, "Hi." Cute, yes. Acceptable, no. I put her back in bed and each bed/naptime since she has stayed in bed and fallen asleep.

Sleep tight sweet Tatters!!

Mommy and Me

Today was our first day at Mommy and Me Class. Hannah has been asking to go to school ever since her friend Abby started preschool (her mom went back to work), so after a little research and networking I heard about this Mommy and Me class. The class is a one day a week, from 9-12 offered by Miramar Community College which is only 10 minutes from our apartment. The class is $10 per kid for the semester! So basically it's close, affordable and a great opportunity for the kids to play, make crafts, learn structure of the class.
Overall, Hannah loved it, Kate liked playing outside, but while she was inside she was very nervous that I was going to leave and so she never let me out of her sight and if I was not within arms reach she cried. I think once she become familiar with the room and the structure she will become more comfortable. The class is run by a early childhood teacher named Mrs. Peterson, and she seems to be a very caring teacher. I liked the feel of the class, the positive attitude, the activities and the exposure to other kids. Can't wait for Dec. 1 when we go back!

Fakes-giving

Living close to two families is great...two times the celebrations, and I love to celebrate! This weekend we celebrated an early Thanksgiving, Fakes-giving as I called it, with my family. We also called it a birthday party for Jeff (Oct. 4), Jenna (Nov. 10) and Kirk (Nov. 17) since getting everyone together is not as easy as it sounds!

Olive us had fun!!

My mom had no idea that we were not using our pinkie fingers...he, he, he!

The cousins at play...Joe and Kara really take care of the younger kiddos. They are such great cousins, and Hannah has not stopped asking for more cousins (any siblings out there want to oblige her?).

Here we are...the whole crew. It marks the first Thanksgiving that Jeff and I have celebrated with California family since 2002. Good times!!

Big Girl Hannah and Toddler Kate

Meet My Big Girl, Hannah:
My "big gurl" Hannah will be the first to tell people she is not a baby. No more singing her Rock-a-bye-Baby. It's now Rock-a-bye-Hannah. And she's right. She is no longer a toddler but a little girl. She sets the table in for dinner, clears the napkins when we are done, gets her own cups, puts her clothes away and cleans up her toys. She tells me often that she loves me, and hangs on Jeff when he gets home telling him that she missed him during the day, and she does miss him. She asks to go eat with daddy, play with daddy, and she asks when daddy will scoop her up (one of her favorite things Jeff does when he gets home is scoop her up and give her kisses). She cares for Kate with kisses, sharing toys, and reading her books because according to her, "Tatters a baby and no read like me."She is a complete joy, a reminder of God's grace.

Hannah has also started to challenge Jeff and I by saying things like, "Mommy, you no tell me wut do!" or, "No! I no do it, and you no make me!" This girl has a spunk! She keeps Jeff and I praying for guidance and mercy and thinking how to "train [her] in the way [she] should go [so] when [she] is old [she] will not turn from it." Proverb 22:6
A recent conversation Hannah and I had:
H: Mom, help! My head hurt! (said with whine)
S: Well, maybe you need to drink more water. Can I get you some water?
H: No, I need mon-ehhhh! (said with greed)
Seriously, does she think I will pay her to stop whining? Would it work???

Jeff and I have promoted Hannah to the Critter's Class for Sunday School, feeling the the nursery, consisting of one other kid that cries the entire time, Kate, and involving baby toys, was too young for her. I was amazed on Wednesday when I decided that I should review the Critter Memory Verse with her. I started, "Give," and she contined by saying (with actions), "and given to me! (hitting her belly with both hands) Shakin' (shaking her hands from side to side) and runnin' over (running in place)." The verse is actually, "Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over." Luke 6:38a and refers to the forgiveness that we have been given, and how we should not judge or condemn others but instead should overflow with forgiveness ourselves. What an encouragement it is to see God's truth taking root in her heart through memorizing scripture at such a young age!! And how great it is to know that we are not alone, but that we have a church that will support us as parents! I'll toast to that! Cheers!
Hannah also loves playing games. Throughout the day she asks, "Let's play sumthin." The challenges to playing games are 1. keep Kate occupied long enough to complete a game, and 2. clean the game up before Hannah's attention diverts to another activity. Games are also tricky because there are rules to games...you can't just do what you want, take whatever color you want, move to whatever spot you want... Yet another hard, but important lesson in life this big girl is learning!

Meet My Toddler, Kate:
Kate, who is now called Tatters at church and on the playground, is such a toddler now. She tries new things every day, and falls a lot. Her new habit of carrying around the stool to climb on things is not helping her at all. This morning Hannah bounced (literally, jumping up and down) into my room and announced, "Tat-ters go-in pot-ty on da tol-it!" Before I could process her statement I heard a thud followed by a loud cry. I ran to the bathroom and found Kate stuck on the floor between the toilet and the tub crying, actually more like screaming, loudly. Potty training is not in the near future!
I tried to style Kate's hair to reduce the people complimenting me on what a "Handsome little boy he is" but it proved useless. As part of her toddlerness she has become very vocal when things are not as she likes it, and after 5 minutes of her fussing and pulling at the bands I decided this was a non-issue and took out the pigtails. She instantly laughed as if to say, "I win," but on second thought I decided to interpret her chuckles as, "Thanks mom. You're the best!"

Kate is a pure delight. She understands so much, and yet can communicate so little, causing a immense amount of frustration for this toddler. She has this great full body nod, and when you guess what she wants to do what she wants she nods with satisfaction and relief. I can't wait for her words to grow, and to completely understand this thoughtful, funny, energetic toddler.

So, here it is, Thursday afternoon. Thursday is the day I crash, figuratively speaking. I am tired and ready for the weekend support of my husband who is such a hands-on dad. How are the Murry girls today? Meet my do-by self-big-girl and my totally toddler tatters:
This picture should tell you everything. I tried to make Hannah wear a coat to the park. I tried to convince Hannah to wear a. no socks with the brown shoes or b. sneakers with the socks. I tried to get Kate to wear her pink shoes and not the brown ones that a. don't match and b. are suddenly too small. I tried to get them both to smile. Documentation of all the highlights and low lights of the Murry family: Priceless.

I podcasted a sermon the other day and Pastor Rick said, "No sane person commits to getting married, and no sane people have kids. You are enticed by the promises of the highlights that these endeavors bring." So true. I lead an insane life with so many highlights (and low lights for that matter!) and my heart overflows with happiness. My girls in their unique stages of life are a constant reminder of God's blessings and grace in my life. Even the simple act of making cookies or doing dishes are more fun with six hands there to add to the chaos.
