Our Garden

Gardening with Dad
Hannah found a rolly polly
She gave the rolly polly to Kate
Who then dropped the rolly polly.

Our fruit and vegetable garden...sweet peas, onions, basil, zucchini, squash, strawberries, and tomatoes. We hope to add some watermelon and pumpkins soon so come next fall we can carve our own home grown jack-o-lantern!

The Big 3-1

It's true, I'm spoiled. I've officially had four, no five, birthday celebrations and some friends are planning on taking me out tomorrow, so I guess that makes six celebrations.
Celebration #1 with Rachel, Joe, Kara, Mom, Dad, Jeff, Hannah and Kate
Celebration #2 with Jenna (and soon to be Josiah? Jedidiah? Esau?), Clint, Amy, Mom, Dad, Jeff (taking picture), Hannah and Kate
Celebration #3 Jeff arranged for babysitters for the girls and then took me out to dinner and a comedy show Friday night. We had a great, great time!
Celebration #4 Today at playgroup the other moms and kids sang happy birthday and I blew out a candle on a brownie bite...the kids were totally wound up and on the way home Hannah told me I had a great party!

Celebration #5 Involved Jeff being super husband/dad/man. Jeff got up at 5am this morning to bake me a cake, wrap my present and then he let me sleep in (which meant a late start to his very hectic day). Tonight he got home from work and cooked and cleaned dinner, bathed the kids (so I can blog) and we plan on watching the last finale of LOST!

While putting the candles with the girls Jeff was hiliarious about how old I am (even though he will always be older!). Here are some comments he made tonight:

Hannah, I hate to break it to you but we have to use almost all of these candles. That's just how old your mom is.

Let's see if I can get these all lit in three matches.

He topped off his comments with, "That's a lot of smoke...Yowzers! Someone turn a fan on!"

Jeff has a great way of both spoiling and keeping things real at the same time! I love my husband and appreciate all the things he coordinated and did to make my birthday so special. Thank you Jeff for all you do!! I love you!!

A Simple Toy Box

You can't put my kids in a box, literally. And if you do, be prepared for the consequences...
Kate was very excited to climb in the toy box...
...until her sister joined her...
...and then she lost it...
...and couldn't get it back.

Mother's Day

Circumstances were such that last June for Father's Day we were in San Francisco with Jeff's family preparing for his grandmother's funereal, and this year for Mother's Day we were again in San Fransisco preparing for Jeff's grandfather's funereal. Although it was a somber time, it was comforting to be together and remember the value of family.

From San Diego to San Francisco it is about 9 hours of driving, so we broke the trip into two long car rides. We traveled 5 hours on Friday to Fresno and spent the night with my side of the family where we were able to see cousins, aunts, uncles, and my cousin's kids which Hannah and Kate instantly took to. The long car ride was spent watching shows, singing songs, eating snacks, sleeping and digging through a bag of toys and books.
Hannah would not even take her eyes off the screen to smile or say hi.
She loves shows these days!!
Kate, with an empty box of raisins, sound asleep.

We drove the remainder of the way Saturday and enjoyed an evening meal with the extended family and watched a slide show of Jeff's grandfather's, Grandpere, life. It was nice to hear family stories, see family and family friends in photographs and just be together.

On Sunday, Mother's Day, we had a breakfast of baked french toast and eggs together, exchanged cards, and then headed out to park time for some run around time the girls.

Before Hannah or Kate entered our family, I remember praying that God would allow me to be a mom and that He would give me patience until He did. It was hard waiting, and there were tears shed during that waiting period. And now, here we are, two wonderful daughters later. I feel blessed beyond blessed to have these girls in my life. I celebrate Mother's Day focused on what God has allowed me to be: a Mom. No matter how my kids act, what cards or gifts are bought (or not bought), what meals are prepared or cleaned (or not prepared and not cleaned!) or whatever happens, I know the joy of being a mom and having Hannah and Kate as my daughters.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

(Side note: San Fransisco really is quite windy as evidenced by Kate's hair!)

Snuggles

Kate gives the best snuggles ever! She is my little snuggle bug and I eat it up every chance I get!!

Hannah saw how much fun we were having and had drop her bubbles and join in!
Although she likes sunggling, Hannah was off and back at play within seconds...

And a funny story from this morning. Hannah likes to pretend to be farm "am-in-mals." You only realize she is an am-in-mal when she crawls around the house oinking or mooing at you. This morning we had a conversation like this:

H: Mama, you a pig!
S: No sweetie I am your mama.
H: Are you a cow?
S: No, I am your mama.
H: Well you sure stinky!

Just what you need to hear in the morning, right? And a video to show you the spunk of our quiet snuggle bug: don't be deceived by her sweet soft voice (you may have to turn up the volume on your computer to hear her).

When this girl says no, she means it.

My Mom

If I could be like one person, it would be my mom. Why, you ask?
My mom was the person who taught me to read, write, count, and gave incredible art lessons where we had to warm up our eyes...which to this day I still don't know what that means, but since it was part of the lesson I did.
She was the person that encouraged me when my friend in fourth grade told me she didn't want to be my friend anymore, reassuring me that I was smart and funny, and that my friend was making a mistake. She was the one who listened to me cry when the boys in junior high were teasing me for being fat, and then she was the one who woke up at 6am in the morning to walk with me before school so I would feel better about myself. My mom was the one who left "I love you because..." cards on my breakfast spot in the morning in high school to remind me that someone loved me despite my selfish teenage attitude. She was the one who took my sisters and I to coffee every week so we could listen, talk, and learn to love each other during our teenage years.
She was the one who raised three confident and determined, college educated ladies who married good Christian men while maintaining a healthy marriage and social life through the various stages of her life. She was the first to sacrifice and the last to complain, a model that I hope to be for my girls.
I am grateful for my mom, and aspire to be like her in so many ways. I am blessed to say that my mom is not just my mom , but also my friend. I enjoy being around her, and I look forward to time with her. I love my mom.
Don't even get me started about my sisters!!!
